Telstra Dome to host Game One of the 2009 State of Origin Series
MEDIA RELEASE - September 4,2008

The Australian Rugby League has confirmed that Melbourne’s Telstra Dome will host the opening match of the 2009 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series on June 3.

ARL Chairman Mr Colin Love AM made the announcement while in Melbourne today while attending a function for Telstra Dome’s Rugby League World Cup match between Australia and England on November 2.

The move is part of an ongoing commitment to representative matches in Melbourne and continues a successful partnership with Telstra Dome and the Victorian Major Events Committee.

It follows a sell out State of Origin crowd of 54,833 in 2006 as well as another crowd of over 30,000 for the Australia v New Zealand Test the same year.

“Through representative matches and the Melbourne Storm there is a strong commitment to providing Melbourne audiences with direct access to the best in Rugby League,” Mr Love said.

“The response from Melbourne fans, from the Victorian government and from the Telstra Dome management has been very encouraging.

“Rugby League has a long history of staging quality events in Melbourne and there is no doubt that a city with such a vibrant sporting culture deserves to see the very best the game can offer.”
