Etihad Stadium to host T20 Big Bash
Thursday 24 Mar 2011
Details of the revamped Twenty20 Big Bash League have been announced with Cricket Victoria confirming Etihad Stadium will host the Melbourne Renegades.
The side, which will wear red uniforms and be led by Bushrangers assistant coach, Simon Helmot, will be based at Etihad Stadium. Cross-town rival, the Melbourne Stars will be based at the MCG.
Etihad Stadium is a unique venue for hosting cricket. The retractable roof guarantees play regardless of weather conditions.
Etihad Stadium CEO Ian Collins AM said the venue was excited to be announced as one of the host venues for the upcoming Big Bash League.
“We have previously hosted international one-day fixtures and the venue’s personnel understand the requirements and nuances of the game,” he said.
“The drop in wicket technology we used worked well at previous events, and we expect a similar result in the coming summer.
“We have the facilities to accommodate the staging of the T20 competition, and we look forward to an exciting competition.
“Obviously a feature of our stadium is the retractable roof which will provide certainty of play whatever the weather, and we also think our stadium which provides seating for around 55,000 patrons, should be an excellent fit for the Big Bash,” Mr Collins said.
The Big Bash League season will commence in mid-December 2011 and is expected to conclude at the end of January 2012.
