Etihad Stadium and the Docklands
The venue is proud that it has become something of a flagship project for the vibrant Docklands development. Etihad Stadium was the first development in the Docklands - it has provided the impetus for what's now become a clear adjunct to the city's CBD. The Victorian Government initially conveyed its support to the development of the new stadium by building bridges to the city and committing to the redevelopment of Spencer Street train station, now known as Southern Cross station. The Docklands continues to expand with the continued development of apartments, shopping centres, restaurants and bars, as well as tram and train access.
History of the Docklands
Docklands, originally a wetland area, consisted of water fowl, fish, swamps and low vegetation. This area, between the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers, was considered a meeting place and hunting ground for several Aboriginal communities dating back to 8000bc. Tribes such as the Wurundjeri, the Boonerwrung, Taungurong, Djadja Wurrung and the Wathaurong tribe once called Docklands their home.
In the early 1850s, Melbourne was in the midst of the gold rush. Victoria Dock (now Victoria Harbour) in Docklands was created to meet the demands of the accompanying mass migration.
By 1860, Docklands was home to the West Melbourne gas works, railway industry, a pottery works and an explosives magazine. Other industries, such as abattoirs, fellmongeries and tanneries, set up in the area due to its isolation from the township and proximity to water.
This growth of the Docklands continued through to the late 1930s. In 1997 the construction of Docklands Stadium began (Etihad Stadium). In 2000, the stadium opened up along with transport links to and from the Docklands.
